Voyeurism: Paris

A whole day to roam.....

Streetwise: Documentary Photography of Mary Ellen Mark

If you haven't been to the exhibition at the Getty, Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography Since the Sixties, I recommend you check that stuff out.  All of it is hard to take in in gulp and I felt pretty exhausted after processing what I could of it.  The stuff that really grabbed me was the work of Mary Ellen Mark--a documentary photographer for Life Magazine.  Her photographs of runaways on the streets of Seattle straddle a fine line between objective and subjective photography--questioning the basic assumption that news and information are best delivered in ways that strive toward neutrality and negate mediation.  She comments on the basic commonality of human experience, as all good photographers should!!

She was only one of the great photographers on display.  Go see it if you live in LA.

LOCAL NATIVES

Music has this great way of building a home for me, a home that I take with me no matter where I am.  Local Natives is a great room in my musical house--reminding me of one of the greatest summers of my life.  Road trips. gas stations. Santa Fe. Kayaking the Rio Grande.  Baths.  Brushing my teeth. Busking on the streets.  Drinking coffee.  It's truly a special time when you grow into a band, and you feel them grow into you--providing a platform on which to live your life with eyes wide open. Does this make any sense?

I tried to sneak into their show last night to no avail--being poo-pooed on by two security guards.  I tried my best, boys!  And being the technologically disabled woman that I am, I can't upload their videos on here. I know I'm doing something wrong, but I choose to blame this machine. I'll just post the links, let you watch them, and hope that you fall as hard for them as I did.

cheers.

Some Of My Faces

Faces of Dan Winters

I stumbled upon Dan Winters' stuff about a year ago at the MOCA in downtown LA.  I'll never forget first seeing the picture of Laura Dern, looking like she is holding in a scream that could crack windows.

Laura Dern does a dern good job of making me feel completely uncomfortable when I look at this.
